There are restaurants on Place des Vosges. And then there is Anne, hidden in the garden courtyard of the Pavillon de la Reine.
Beneath the arcades of the oldest square in Paris, a shaded garden leads to this quietly luxurious five-star hotel, named in tribute to Anne of Austria. Its Michelin-starred restaurant is beginning a new chapter with chef Thibault Sombardier, supported in the kitchen by executive chef Matthieu Pirola.
The chef describes his cooking in three words: generous, precise and elegant. Whiting quenelles with lobster, chicken vol-au-vent with sweetbreads and foie gras: the great French repertoire feels alive here, following the seasons. Lunch menus at 79 and 89 euros, a vegetarian menu at 155 euros and a tasting menu at 200 euros.
In winter, dine in the intimate library lounge. In summer, the leafy garden courtyard becomes one of the most secluded terraces in the Marais. Sunday brunch, from 11:30 to 15:00, brings the weekend to a gentle close.
Because dining in a hidden courtyard on Place des Vosges feels like a version of Paris you thought existed only in films.
